Municipal waste-service delivery and policy contributions: integrating volunteers and civil-society organisations, contributing to waste characterisation, and shaping state solid-waste planning.
RoleProject Manager; later Manager, International and Medical Waste
Period2018–2020
The assignment
My environmental work combined service operations with regulatory engagement and policy planning. At WestAfricaENRG, I worked as a Project Manager from January 2018 to December 2019. At Merivale Waste Management, I served as Manager, International and Medical Waste from November 2019 to October 2020.
The operating context
Waste policy becomes tangible through collection routes, contractor performance, recycling systems, public complaints and the institutions responsible for delivery. This work gave me direct experience of the operational conditions that determine whether a public service functions.
My contributions
Coordinated private-sector waste-service operators, review meetings, service monitoring and reporting in Oyo State.
Worked on contractor registration, responsible-disposal documentation, industrial and commercial client services, and responses to public complaints.
Developed collection, transportation and disposal implementation plans for Oyo and Ogun States, alongside monthly and quarterly municipal waste reports.
Contributed to Oyo State’s waste-characterisation study, linking understanding of the waste stream with municipal planning.
Contributed to the policy approach for integrating volunteers, civil-society organisations and NGOs into mainstream municipal waste management, creating room for additional hands alongside formal service providers.
Contributed to the draft Oyo State solid-waste master plan and policy guidelines for 2020–2035.
Supported recycling and buy-back initiatives, school-based recycling activities, and engagement with residents, traders and community organisations.
Participated in technical planning for a proposed 14 MW green-power plant and associated agro-waste compost facility at Aba-Eku.
