Innovative Approaches to Waste management are germane today, because  waste management is a pressing concern in Nigeria, and  as  a country experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. The improper handling of waste poses significant environmental and health challenges. However, innovative approaches to waste management have emerged in various regions of Nigeria, showcasing effective solutions that can lead to positive environmental outcomes. In this article, we will explore several case studies of successful waste management projects or programs across Nigeria, highlighting the innovative approaches and  strategies employed and the impact they have made on waste reduction, resource recovery, and overall environmental sustainability.

 

Clean Lagos Initiative

This project aimed to transform waste management in the city by implementing a comprehensive system that includes waste collection, recycling, and disposal. It introduced modern waste collection trucks, improved waste sorting and processing facilities, and implemented a waste-to-energy program to generate electricity from organic waste.

Under the leadership of Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD at the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Clean Lagos Initiative, launched by the Lagos State government, aimed to tackle the waste management challenges in Nigeria’s most populous city. This project focuses on incentivizing individuals and households to recycle by providing points that can be redeemed for rewards such as cash, household items, or vouchers. RecyclePoints operates recycling hubs across the city, where residents can bring their recyclables in exchange for points.
